Golf Equipment – What You Need To Get Started

There are many brands and types of golf clubs including drivers, fairway woods, rescue clubs, irons and putters. Each type of golf club has a relevant purpose on the golf course; the driver for example is used from the tee for long distance shots, the irons are used for short approach shots – approaching the green and naturally the putter is used for finishing. Which golf club you choose and at which stage of the game is a combination of personal preference and experience.

A golf bag is used to transport and protect your clubs to and from the golf course and throughout the game. There are four main types of golf bag including carry, stand, trolley and light editions – which bag you select is usually down to both personal preference and requirements e.g. number of golf clubs or how you intend to transport the bag and clubs around the golf course. If you prefer to not use a golf trolley then a stand Read the rest of this entry »

Despite their similarities all golf balls are not manufactured to identical specifications; there are in fact some 4,900 and counting patents in existence of which a majority were registered in the past decade.

How Helpful Are Golf Swing Training Aids?

A lot of golfers write me and ask about various golf training aids that they have seen or that their golfing buddies have recommended.  First let me start out by saying that I am not against swing trainers.  There are some that I use and recommend, but I also have seen a lot of junk on the market that many golfers buy and see zero results from using them.  But I don’t position myself as an expert on swing trainers, so if there are some out there that I am not familiar with, please feel free to email me about them and I will check them out and get back to you.

First I want to talk for a minute about who, in my opinion, should use swing trainers and for what purposes.  Then I will mention a couple that I like personally.  What I am attempting to do in this article is give you an objective opinion that will help you to determine what is best for your golf swing.

I believe that players of all abilities Read the rest of this entry »

Alignment Tips For Golf – Getting Set Up Correctly Makes A Huge Difference!

If you know anything about golf, then you know that in order to hit the target you are aiming for there are many components that go into the swing.  One thing that is completely necessary to help you hit your target is to get some very good alignment tips.  If you are not aligned correctly at your target, then you will never stand a chance when it comes to hitting your actual target.  This means that you will miss a lot of fairways and greens.  Here is what you should know about aligning properly.

First, most golfers do not know what should be aligned with the target.  It is not your feet, your shoulders, or your hips.  In fact your entire body should be aligned parallel left of the target (for a right handed player) just like railroad tracks.  The part of the club that you want aligned with the target is the face of your club.  This should make perfect sense since you are going to be hitting the Read the rest of this entry »

Offseason Plan For Golfers

I am fortunate to live in the sunny southern part of the United States. So we get to pretty much play golf year round.  Some years it is colder and wetter than normal, but most years there aren’t any months we can’t play several rounds a month.

But many of our members and golf friends of mine live in colder parts of the United States and other parts of the world.  In some cases they stop playing golf in the September-October timeframe and start up again in April or so.  Wow, I can’t imagine not playing for that period of time, but as I said, I am very fortunate.

So for all of you golfers who can’t play for months at a time, what should you be thinking about or doing during those cold winter months when you can’t play a round of golf.  I have some suggestions for you that I recommend to my students.

The first area that I encourage all golfers to consider is overall conditioning. Read the rest of this entry »

Golf Club Distance – Your Clubs or Your Swing?

Most golfers are obsessed with golf club distance. They seemed to think that their game hinges on how far they can hit that ball. In an effort to increase their average club distances they will try almost anything, including wasting a lot of money on clubs that are supposed to help them get more distance.

Here’s the problem with that: most golfers are not hitting the ball as far as they could be with the clubs they already have. Buying a hybrid club will just mean that they will have one more club in their bag that they are not hitting as far as they could with. That can be fixed in our swing.

The key to hitting a golf ball far is in your club head speed. The faster the club contacts the ball the more distance you will get from that golf club. Here’s where the amateur makes his first mistake. Hitting the ball harder is not the same as hitting the ball faster. When you attempt to hit the ball harder Read the rest of this entry »

Walking While You Play Golf

One of the things that I have really come to enjoy over the years is playing a round of golf while walking.  Sure it is much more convenient and easier to use a golf cart, but if you have never walked a round of golf, I encourage you to give it a try.

I have lived and played most of my golf in the deep South.  This makes it a bit of a challenge to walk a round of golf due to the heat and humidity.  During July and August the heat and humidity can make playing at all a challenge. Sometimes the best you can do is to tee off early in the morning and finish you round before it just becomes unbearably hot.

For this reason, I played golf for several years as an adult before I walked my first round.  I have always stayed in good shape and didn’t feel guilty using a cart since I knew I was getting my exercise elsewhere.  Then one summer evening a friend asked me to play nine holes after work and he Read the rest of this entry »
